How to Strategise Your Tech Career in Europe
(and Why It Might Be Easier to “Win” Here Than in the US)
Engineers have way more opportunities in the US than they do in Europe.
But, at least in some ways, it’s easier to “win” as a software engineer in Europe.
Why? The competition can be less fierce, because many developers here don’t take the time to strategically study the market.
If you’re willing to put in the effort, there’s significant opportunity.
Step 1: Look Inward
Before diving into job searches or big career moves, do some self-reflection:
Strengths & unfair advantages → Are you particularly strong in a specific technology? Do you have a unique background that sets you apart?
Lifestyle preferences → Do you want a flexible schedule? Do you care more about work-life balance or maximizing income?
Limitations → Location-based constraints, skill gaps, or personal preferences that will shape your goals.
Step 2: Choose the Right Path for You
Once you’re clear on your strengths, preferences, and limitations, assess which career path best suits your situation.
Options to consider:
🔹 Big Tech Careers in Europe
Stability, high pay, and great perks.
Highly competitive, but possible with the right preparation.
🔹 High-Paying Swiss Careers
Some of the highest salaries for software engineers in Europe.
Often focused on finance and enterprise tech.
🔹 Fully-Remote High-Paying Jobs
Flexibility to live anywhere.
Many roles pay US-level salaries — but require networking and being in the right circles.
Step 3: Make an Action Plan & Execute
The most important part of strategising your career is taking action.
Research your path → Understand the industries, companies, and roles you’re targeting. Learn the interview processes and success factors.
Prioritise effectively → Ask: Where do I want to be in 12 months? What’s my #1 priority right now?
Execute consistently → Put in the work daily — learning new skills, prepping for interviews, and building your network.
Accept the Need for Change
If you feel stuck — low pay, poor location, or an unfulfilling lifestyle — something has to change.
Recognising this is the hardest step, but it’s the key to progress.
Make a Plan & Stay Positive
Change takes time — your plan doesn’t need to be perfect.
Start with what you know, take action, and adjust as you go.
Remember: your situation is probably better than it feels right now.
You already have skills, motivation, and work ethic.
A Personal Insight: Finding the Right Fit
Years ago, I thought climbing the big tech ladder was the ultimate goal.
But after spending time in those circles, I realised: Few of the senior folks I met made me think, “In 10 years, I want this to be my life.”
We often only see the highlights of others’ careers — titles, salaries, prestigious companies — but life is about much more than LinkedIn bragging rights.
Set goals, but don’t put them on a pedestal. What works for others might not work for you.
Take One Step at a Time
You don’t need to have everything figured out today.
Just focus on progress — one step at a time.
Over time, things will start to fall into place.
You got this! 💪
